Hannah Brown

Artist Statement:

I am drawn to contradictions: nature and expensive diamonds; serious and playful; ugly and pretty. These off-balance encounters become central to my work, weaving elements that may feel awkward or unexpected yet ultimately reveal a layered beauty.

As Brené Brown says, “When we deny our stories, they define us. When we own our own stories, we get to write the ending.” In my Crow Series, I play with this idea by using the crow—a bird often dismissed as the “hood rat” of the avian world—and contrasting it with the elegance of diamonds and gems. This contrast highlights how embracing all parts of ourselves, even those we’re taught to overlook or deny, can lead to something surprising and extraordinary.

My piece Power Pearls embodies this same spirit, using pearls as a symbol of feminine strength, confidence, and resilience. For me, this work celebrates the power of women reclaiming their stories, gaining wisdom from our pasts, and boldly shaping our own futures. Through each piece, I aim to capture the beauty that comes when we claim our stories and, in doing so, write our own endings.
